I love coffee shops in Austin. The more eclectic the better. I work from them, relax in them, even drink in them. Which is why I often find myself drifting away from many of the out of the way coffee shops on the east side, and instead head downtown.
Halcyon advertises itself as serving all the legal vices, and it delivers. Coffee is just the start at this fourth street lounge, where you can also get beers, cocktails, tobacco and cigars. The outdoor sidewalk tables are filled with regulars and tourists enjoying the luxuries in life, whilst the inside varies between a hotspot for Austin’s many remote workers during the day, and a popular evening hang out on an evening.
There is definitely a shift around 7pm each day. Around this time the regulars and the workers leave, and are quickly replaced by couples and groups of friends who stop by to try some of the tasty liquor concoctions and sit around the table top s’mores stations. (roasting your own marshmallows and making s’mores in the middle of downtown can be a surprisingly romantic date in Austin!)
And yes, Halcyon does food too! Mostly prepared in it’s downtown location you can get some standard coffee shop fair (Sandwiches, pastries and so on) which help solidify it is a popular lunch spot for office workers in the area.
But what really brings me to Halcyon during the week, when it would be so much easier to head to a more local coffee shop close to my home?
Honestly, it’s the atmosphere. The music changes regularly, the staff are friendly, as are the regulars. It’s easy to find a quiet spot to work in, and just as easy to find somewhere to relax for a few minutes when you need to take a break. Halcyon is a place that anyone can feel at home, whether they want to work, relax, play or eat. This is just one of the reasons why it easily made it on to my list of the Eight Great Coffee Shops in Austin.
The atmosphere is hard to find, that eloquent mix of relaxed but still public enough to keep you focused if you need to be.
Sure, if you are looking for things to do in Austin there are plenty more exciting things you could be doing, but Halcyon is a great place to take a break along the way!
